The CFA Program is divided into three examination levels. Passing these exams is the most important step to becoming a CFA charterholder.

*Item sets are sometimes called “mini-cases.” Each item set on the CFA exam consists of a vignette (or case statement) and six multiple choice questions.
  • Morning session: Constructed response (essay) questions (usually between 8 and 12 questions, each with several subparts) with a maximum of 180 points. (The point value for each question is provided in the exam book.)
  • Afternoon session: 10 item sets* each followed by 6 multiple choice questions, making total of 60 multiple choice questions

How to become a CFA® Charterholder

  • Pass the CFA® exams
  • Complete education and work experience requirements
    • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
    • Four years of relevant work experience
  • Become a CFA institute member
    • You can become a member while you are in the process of getting the charter or wait until the end
  • Abide by the code of ethics
    • As a CFA Program candidate or CFA Institute member, you are required to abide by the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct

Things you should know about the CFA exam

  • You cannot sit for next level before passing the previous level
  • Students may take the exam before graduating
  • The CFA Institute will email you your exam result and post it in your personal CFA Institute account approximately 60 days after the day of your test for Levels 1 and 2, and 90 days after the day of your test for Level 3
  • Each candidate who sits for a CFA exam is provided with a "pass" or "did not pass" exam result as well as detailed information on their performance
  • Performance reports are sent by email and show whether you scored <=50%, between 50%-70% or >70% for each section of the exam
  • Unsuccessful candidates are divided into ten equal bands; band 10 candidates will know they were in the decile of unsuccessful candidates that came closest to passing (i.e., top 10% of those who did not pass)
  • After candidates receive their exam result, they may register for the next exam
