We offer you the flexibility to start this journey with any of the below available parts and dates. Once a part is selected, the following parts must be taken in order.

How to become CMA certified

  • Pass the CMA exams
  • Complete the educational and work experience requirements
    • A bachelor's degree or a professional accounting certification
    • 2 years of work experience
  • Download and fill the CMA Experience Requirement Verification Form. This must be completed and returned to IMA
  • Upon verification of your education and experience documents, you will receive your CMA certificate number

Things you should know about the CMA exam

  • Take Part 1 and Part 2 in any order
  • Students who do not have a Bachelor’s degree can contact the IMA and explain the reason of not having a Bachelor’s degree, then the IMA can decide if the candidate is eligible to sit for the exam
  • The two CMA exam parts must be completed within 3 years of your application approval
    • If your eligibility expires, you lose all exam credits and you have to submit a new application, with fees paid in full
  • You will get your exam results approximately six weeks after the end of the month in which you've taken your test. > The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) will email you your exam results, and post them in your personal MyIMA transcript.
    • Candidates who do not pass will receive a report that indicates their performance on each of the key topic areas in the exam
  • If you fail a CMA part, you can register again for the same part in the following testing window. An exam part may be taken only once in a testing window

  • 12 - 18 months to complete both parts, on average
  • Time limit of 3 years to complete the two parts
  • Candidates spend an average of 180 - 220 hours preparing for the exam for both parts
  • It is suggested you start studying at least 2 months before the exam date
